Zend Framwork 3 is finally here!
On Tuesday, June 28, 2016, Rogue Wave was thrilled to release Zend Framework 3. The excitement behind this release was due to the fact that it is the first major release in four years.
Zeev Suraski exclaims “this is an exciting time to be a PHP developer. With Zend Framework 3, we’re continuing our quest to make creating PHP applications simpler, more accessible and faster.”
Benefits of Zend Framework 3 include the “freedom to use the components within Zend Framework applications or within any other framework” which reduces dependencies and allows for greaer reuse within the PHP ecosystem. Another benefit is that Zend Framework 3 comes with Expressive, a middleware runtime that increases simplicity and interoperability.
Enrico Zimuel also notes the enhanced capabilities of Zend Framework 3, which include:
-
50+ separate components on GitHub
-
Support of PSR-7 standards
-
Middleware and MVC patterns
-
4x faster than the previous Zend Framework 2
-
Supports PHP 5.5 and onward (although it’s optimized for PHP 7)
ZendCon 2016
Between June 28 and June 30, five keynotes speakers for ZendCon were announced: Robert C. “Uncle Bob” Martin, Laura Thomson, Andi Gutmans, Rod Cope, and Cal Evans.
Uncle Bob was the first chairman of Agile Alliance and is a leading member of the Worldwide Software Craftsmanship Movement. His unique views will leave all attendees excited about PHP. Laura Thomson is the author of the book “PHP and MySQL Web Development” and is the director of engineering at Mozilla, specializing in web architecture development. Zend co-founder Andi Gutmans will also speak at ZendCon with his personal insight and knowledge on PHP. Rod Cope is the OpenLogic founder and CTO of Rogue Wave. When not indulging in his day-to-day role at Rogue Wave, Cal Evans can be found working on a variety of projects like Nomad PHP.
Adam Culp, the host of ZendCon 2016, states “We’re pleased to have a well-rounded group of PHP and open source experts who have such impressive and broad expertise.”
Needless to say, this year’s ZendCon will be full of insight and something that you do not want to miss!

Reflections
With less than a month left here at Rogue Wave Software, I have found myself constantly reflecting back on my time here. The past year has flown by, and I truly appreciate all the activities within the workplace that have built personal relationships and helped with communication between employees in a social setting. As I look back on my experience here, I realize how important these activities are (and not only because they usually involve free food).
During my reflecting, I noticed a couple of key highlights that made my time here especially exciting. These included:
-
Chill n Grill: I mean, how could you NOT enjoy a nice afternoon of corn hole, burgers, hot dogs, beer, and an absurd amount of sides Getting to hang out and relax with coworkers is a huge plus too.
-
The Christmas Party: Yes, I’m aware that this involves free food and alcohol as well … but the reason that this sticks with me is because even though I’d only been working here as an intern for a couple months, everyone at the party was outgoing and welcoming.
-
Burrito Thursdays: THE BEST DAY OF THE WEEK. Hands down. (Yes, also free food.)
-
Birthday Celebrations: Everyone here makes coming into work on your birthday worthwhile. I must say, you feel extremely loved when your cubicle (or office) is decorated, you get cards from coworkers, and a delicious birthday treat such as Sweet Cow every month to celebrate birthdays. (And again, free food.)
This past year has been more than I could have ever imagined and I am incredibly grateful for it. Also, a huge shout-out to Mom (that’s you, Tina) for setting up all these awesome events. Thank you all for an amazing year.
